Dive Insurance

Scuba diving often takes you far from familiar shores, facilities, and immediate medical care, especially when travelling or diving in remote locations.

While recreational diving is generally safe, being properly prepared matters.

Dive insurance helps ensure that if something unexpected happens, you have access to specialised medical support and coordinated care – without it becoming a financial or logistical burden.

Why dive insurance is different?

Most standard travel or personal accident insurance policies are not designed for scuba diving, particularly when specialised treatment or evacuation is required.

Dive insurance is designed specifically for diving-related medical scenarios, not general travel incidents.

It complements standard travel insurance by addressing what most policies exclude.

What dive insurance covers

While coverage varies by policy, dive insurance commonly includes:

Emergency medical transportation

Evacuation of medically necessary transfer to an appropriate facility

Dive accident medical expenses

Including hyperbaric chamber assessments and treatments when required

24/7 dive-trained medical support

Access to professionals who understand diving physiology and dive-related injuries

Additional travel assistance following a dive accident

Such as trip interruptions, additional accommodation, following a diving incident, and loss of diving equipment (depending on plan type)

These benefits are designed specifically for diving scenarios, not general travel disruptions.

“Coverage varies by plan and insurer. Full terms apply.”

When dive insurance matters most

Dive insurance is particularly relevant if you’re:

Diving in remote or island destinations

Joining a liveaboard

Planning multiple consecutive dive days

Travelling internationally for diving

These are situations where access to appropriate care often requires coordination across locations.

A few things divers often ask us

Is Scubahive the insurer?

No. Scubahive is not the insurer.

We work with established dive insurers to help divers access suitable short-term dive accident coverage for their trips. Insurance coverage is underwritten and issued by the insurer and it subject to their terms, conditions, and exclusions.

Our role is to help you understand the options, facilitate the process, and assist where guidance is needed.

In many cases, standard travel or personal accident insurance does not adequately cover scuba diving, particularly for emergency evacuation, hyperbaric treatment, or dive-specific medical coordination.

Coverage varies widely between policies, it’s best you check your existing policy carefully.

Dive insurance is designed specifically for diving-related medical scenarios rather than general travel incidents.

Recreational diving is generally safe, and most dives go as planned.

Dive insurance isn’t about expecting something to go wrong, it’s about being prepared, particularly when diving overseas, in remote locations, or over multiple days.

For many divers, it’s a relatively small cost that provides peace of mind and access to specialised support if needed.

At the moment, we only facilitate short-term dive accident insurance, suitable for specific trips or dive period (up to 30 days).

If you’re looking for annual coverage, this can usually be arranged directly with insurers such as Divers Alert Network (DAN).

Coverage applies to recreational scuba diving and freediving, subject to the insurer’s terms and eligibility criteria.

No. Dive insurance facilitated here in not intended for commercial diving, professional exploration, or activities where diving is performed as part of paid work or industrial operations.

If you’re involved in commercial or expedition-level diving, you’ll need a specialised policy arranged directly with the insurer.

A primary insurer pays eligible claims first, up to the policy limits.

A secondary (or excess) insurer provides coverage after other applicable insurance has been applied.

Many dive accident insurance plans operate on an excess basis, complementing other valid medival or travel insurance rather than replacing it. This structure helps cover dive-specific costs that standard policies often exclude.

Dive insurance typically provides access to dive-trained medical professionals who understand diving-related conditions. This ensures appropriate advice and coordination alongside local medical teams, rather than relying solely on general medical call-centre triage.

In the event of a dive-related emergency, you (or someone assisting you) should contact the insurer’s emergency support line as soon as possible to obtain guidance and authorisation.

For claims, documentation is usually submitted directly to the insurer according to their claims process. We can help point you in the right direction if you need assistance understanding the steps.

We typically review and respond to quotation requests within 24 hours.

Plan With Confidence

At Scubahive, we believe great dive trips are built on confidence, preparation, and trust.

Dive insurance isn’t about expection problems – it’s about knowing that if something unexpected happens, you’re supported by people who understand diving, travel, and the realities of being far from home.

If you’re unsure what coverage makes sense for your trip, we’re always happy to help you think it through.
